NOAA RTOFS Currents

The US National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Key details has implemented the Global HYCOM (Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model) NCEP. This ocean model is based on the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) 1/12° eddy-resolving global HYCOM model, initialized with conditions generated by the Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (NCODA) system and forced with NCEP’s operational GFS winds. The HYCOM is a hybrid model and assigns different vertical coordinate systems in different regions: 1) isopycnic coordinate model in the open and stratified ocean, assigning each coordinate surface to a reference isopycnic, 2) z-level coordinates model in the mixed layer and/or other unstratified oceanic regions, and 3) traditional terrain-following sigma coordinate in shallow and/or unstratified water. Thereby, the model combines the advantages of the different types of coordinate systems in optimally simulating coastal and open ocean circulation features. Data Provider: https://www.hycom.org/
